1. Message of the Day

FRUSTRATION AVOIDED

"Everything I try to do is like walking through quicksand." Frustration fairly dripped from his words as he blustered around the house looking for his shoes so he could go to an important appointment.

At other times it might be missing keys, wallet, or stamps. A lot of things get lost, hindering what he wants to do.

His second frustration is always having to play the catch-up game. He has to clean up each time guests come because he has allows the house to drift out of control on a regular basis. And neaten the car. The storage room is an unusable jumble. Everywhere he turns some area needs to be rescued.

His solution to the problem of losing things is to buy so many pairs of shoes, sets of keys, or whatnot so that no matter how many he loses, surely one would always be find-able. He avoids allowing people in the house and skips many projects because he can't access the tools he needs.

He could avoid his powerless stance in the world by applying the standard principles of organizing: grouping like items together, storing things properly, getting rid of excess, and putting things back where they belong as he uses them.

As with all of us the choice is between living with the problem or tackling it. Living with the problem is the short term easy way. Tackling it is the good way.

2. Habit of the Day

LOOK BACK, REALLY LOOK BACK!

When you finish an area or room, go to the door, turn around, and focus on seeing what you have done. Make yourself tune in visually.

3. Family Reminder of the Day

In our family, we make sure all trash goes into the trash basket.

In our family, we value each other and the contribution each makes.

4. Quote of the Day

We need to straighten out our standards, and to get rid of a lot of rubbish that we have accumulated.

6. From the Trenches

FOLDING CLOTHES

I fold the clothes up every evening (when the kids are asleep and I'm watching the news) then in the morning they put them all away. I also teach them to put them in their drawers in sets so everything matches. I'm working on getting rid of a lot of clothes. The less they have the easier it is.
(Thanks to Benita)

Another reader's suggests how to help with focus:

The recent newsletter article about folding clothes made me want to share what works for me. I have ADD and I'm pregnant, so I've been dealing with a double helping of distraction and low motivation. Since folding clothes is a portable task, I like to take it outside on my back porch when the weather is nice. The sunshine cheers me up, and there are no other projects calling my name.

This also works well for when I'm sorting through a Vesuvius box. If the weather's rotten, or you don't have an outdoor space that's convenient, try a different change of environment, if you can - maybe even a neighbor's house. Just getting away from all the other distractions at home really helps my focus.
