1. Message of the Day

WHITE BOXES. FRIEND OR FOE?

Much has been said about the value of using white boxes used by businesses for file storage in order to sort and containerize clutter. They are very useful for temporary
day by day storage in the Mt. Vernon method. They are also invaluable as a significant part of the Mt. Vesuvius method.

Both methods are explained on the How to Begin page of the Messies Anonymous website.

Note: White boxes of this type, sometimes called Bankers Boxes (TM)  are about 12 x 18" and sold in office supply stores.

Useful as they are, we need to recognize that those boxes may become a problem if not dealt with wisely.
  • We may wisely decide to use them as storage boxes, labeling them and storing them appropriately.
  • Or we may fill them temporarily and resolve to deal with them by emptying them and collapsing them out of sight. Or discard them because they are cheap. (Avoid large plastic boxes.)
  • However, one very bad idea is to fill them and ignore them. The boxes are friends when used deliberately and with thought. If used without thought just to hold more and more things, they become foes which compound our problem. They become just more clutter. What about your boxes?
Maybe you need a strategy or some ideas on how to  empty those boxes? Check out the audio  called "How to empty the boxes!" Available on CD or as an mp3 download sent to you via return email.

Use the drop down menu to find this helpful audio on emptying the boxes. Each CD or mp3 download is $8.95

2. Habit of the Day

Commit for just this one day.

LOOK BACK, REALLY LOOK BACK! When you finish an area or room, go to the door and focus on seeing what you have done. Make yourself tune in visually. Use an empty toilet roll or a spyglass made by circling your fingers in an open fist. At night, turn on the lights, go outside and look in as you would if you were a passing stranger. You will see your house with new eyes.

3. Family Reminder of the Day

Pick one of these reminders or make one of your own to share with your family each day.

In our family, we speak kindly to each other.

In our family, we think ahead to solve problems before they happen.

In our family, we pay attention in order to maintaining beauty.

4. Quote of the Day

"The chief cause of unhappiness is giving up what you want most for what you want at the moment."

Zig Ziglar

Keep your long term goals in mind. Do not carelessly do unimportant things because they are easier or offer temporary pleasure.

6. Question of The Day

Previously we asked whether you had any projects that needed to be started in order to solve problems that have held on too long. But today the question is whether you can name just one boring, half-finished  project that needs to be completed. Look around and  spy just one thing. Tell us what you see and will start to tackle.

Tell us by posting on Friends-of-The-Organizer-Lady.

7. From the Trenches

From the Trenches - BUSINESS CARDS

An idea that might help anyone who tends to lose  business cards and phone number notes: buy the  pre-sized magnets that fit the back of a business card (found at office supply store - I bought pkg of 10 for $3.19). When you get a business card that  you KNOW you will need again, attach the magnet and "store" the card on your refrigerator or file cabinet. I have my hairdresser, veterinarian, dentist, gyn., primary physician, and a few other "important" cards arranged on the front of my fridge. Then when I have  the time and inclination to enter the card info into my electronic address book (on computer), I know exactly where to find the card. I still keep the card on the fridge for easy/quick access when I need to make a call (as my phone is next to the fridge). There's no rule that you can't take 2 or 3 business cards, so you could keep one at your dressing table and one on the fridge, or in medicine cabinet, or wherever it "fits" the card. good luck, sj

(Thanks, sj)

MESSIES ANONYMOUS SLOGAN

Please memorize this slogan and post it on your wall.

The secret to success is making very small, yet very consistent, changes.

Or to make it short, "Baby steps, baby steps" in the right direction.

"Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness."
