I hope your new year has started off well.  We were off-line for two weeks while our family traveled for Christmas. Now, we are back and ready to continue forward in this journey for order and beauty. Let's see what we can accomplish step by step in the days ahead.

1. Message of the Day

What to do about it?

When facing inertia toward doing boring jobs, a variety of solutions is possible. Several, but not all, are geared to stimulating the adrenaline level so you will be more interested in doing the what needs to be done, boring or not.

Put on stimulating music: polkas, marches, rock, whatever happy music gets your blood (and adrenaline) flowing. Knowing there is an end to the music also encourages you.

Make a commitment with a time limit to somebody. The pressure will stimulate your spirits. Some people call a friend or place a fifteen minute challenge on the internet. After fifteen minutes or so, they get back in touch either by phone or email and report
how they have done.

Change your thinking. Tell yourself that although this part of the job is boring, it is a part of a larger and exciting project. Perhaps our audio, Create Your Dream and Live It will help you transform your thinking.

Give yourself a reward when you finish the job. Make a special long distance call, take a friend to lunch, buy a body splash or piece of costume jewelry or whatever makes you happy.

Attach your boring job to something interesting. Listen to a taped story you enjoy. Do it only when you are doing your filing, cleaning the kitchen, or whatever. You will be glad to get back to it the next day to see what happens.

Set up an automatic routine that includes the boring job. Habit takes over and gives a boost. In this approach, the less emotionally involved you are, the better.

Finally, if possible, consider getting someone else to do the job: a cleaning lady, a hired teenager, or a family member. You may have better contributions to make to the family. Or you may just find that when you work alongside someone else, the job is much easier.

2. Habit of the Day

Commit for just this one day.

Keep your car clean. Take trash and debris out each time you leave your car.

3. Family Reminder of the Day

Pick one of these reminders or make one of your own to share with your family each day.

In our family, we make sure all trash goes into the trash basket.

In our family, we value each other and the contribution each makes.

4. New Quote of the Day

Attitude determines our dreams and goals.
Persistence gets us there.

6. Question of the Day

Previously we asked whether you had any projects that needed to be started in order to solve problems that have held on too long. But today the question is whether you can name just one boring, half-finished project that needs to be completed. Look around and spy just one thing. Tell us what you see and will start to tackle.

From the Trenches by Melissa on the Messies Anonymous Yahoo! group, Messiness and ADD.

Who had the idea to use bankers boxes since they are small-ish & stack neatly? Was it in the Messie Manual?

Anyway, it is a GREAT idea!! I went yesterday to Office Max! I bought 18 on sale! What a DEAL!!! They hold A LOT - magazines, video, tapes, papers (sorted by subject), kids old school papers, board games, puzzles, Barbies, kid's clothes, craft stuff, etc., etc. I have filled all 18 - not filling them completely, but CATEGORIZING & LABELING them with 3x5 cards. I have to go back & buy more!!! Oh PLUS, they fit on that small shelf above your closet rod (if you have the old kind of closet) PERFECTLY!!!!

I am SO AMAZED by the difference this is making!!!

I do have quite a few boxes piled up in my living room, but I tell you, it sure looks better than clutter. At least everything is containerized. It's a start. It's hard to do for very long, but I have been plugging away since noon, taking breaks every half hour or so. 6 hours later, 18 categorized boxes that's 3 boxes an hour (that doesn't take the almost hour it took to put them all together & actually get motivated enough to start)! :-) Anyway, had to share!!!

Thanks, Melissa!
Editor's Note: Messies Manual is now titled Winning the Clutter War

9. Extra Help

Are you hitting a wall with your organizing?
Jackie said, “It’s the hitting the wall that makes this class work.  We get stuck, you get us unstuck, and we keep going.”

Please memorize this slogan and post it on your wall.

The secret to success is making very small, yet very consistent, changes.

Or to make it short, "Baby steps, baby steps" in the right direction.

"Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness."
