1. Message of the Day

THE ORGANIZING JOURNEY

At a convention of the National Association of Professional Organizers, several organizers mentioned to me a favorite motto of theirs: "Organization is a journey, not a destination."

What does this really mean? Before you read further, pause a moment and think about what you think it may mean.

It means that getting the house organized is not the whole answer. Getting the house organized (as by yourself or a professional organizer) is important but the real long
term answer is to change your daily habits consistently.

Following good habits and routines is the journey that will make the organizational difference.

3Habit of the Day - DO THINGS ASAP.

EMPTY THE DISHWASHER as soon as possible after it is finished washing. A full dishwasher causes the sink to gather dishes. Yuck! Bad habit!

HANDLE YOUR MAIL today and every day. The buildup of mail and other papers is the single worst clutter problem.

4. Family Reminder of the Day

Leave no trace. The scouts have a rule that when you leave an area you should leave no trash showing you have been in the area.

5. Quote of the Day

A schedule defends from chaos and whim. It is a net for catching days. It is a scaffolding on which a worker can stand and labor with both hands at sections of time. A schedule is a mock-up of reason and order--willed, faked, and so brought into being.

7. From the Trenches

MARGIE ASKS:

FOLLOW THE RULE OF TEN (AMBIVALENCE BOX THINGS)
Gather ten things you know you should get rid of but don't want to. Put them in an Ambivalence box which you store out of the way. Put a date on the box when you will move it out of the house. You may retrieve an item you must up until that day. On that
date, however, the box is forever sealed to you and the box of things is given away.

QUESTION: When you use this method above, how long should you keep the box? 30, 60, 90 days or a year?
Thank you, Margie

ANSWER: There is no specific guideline. The wait is for your mental benefit. Choose the shortest time you think will suit you. Leave them there long enough to become comfortable with your decision to discard your items. You will also see how much nicer it is without them taking up space in your house. You will also be proud that you are gathering your power to take control of the house. Then you get the energy to discard your items.

9. Extra Help

Are you hitting a wall with your organizing?
Jackie said, “It’s the hitting the wall that makes this class work.  We get stuck, you get us unstuck, and we keep going.”
