1. Message of the Day

THE PET PROBLEM

"Don't keep pets", is the first suggestion for saving time in Shirley Conran's 1978 book called Superwoman. This author is definitely walking on dangerous ground because pets are very important
to many people, especially Messies.

But she does have a point. Sometimes pets are a significant part of the problem for those of us who struggle to keep our houses organized without working ourselves to death. It takes time to care for them with feeding, cleaning their living areas, meeting their health needs, and playing with them. Cleaning up accidents is also a problem. But since we are kind and caring folks, we put up with all of these difficulties because we value the companionship and the love pets provide. We also like to be needed.

None of this is bad. But Messies tend to overdo even the good things. Because we lack of a sense of boundaries, we may place fewer limits on how many pets we have than our tidier neighbors and how we care for them. This can get us into trouble. Are pets adding to your clutter problems? If so, what changes can you make to begin to solve those problems? Perhaps we can resolve not to bring any more new pets into our home, just like we resolve to stop bringing in more things that clutter.

This is a hard question because it involves animals to which we are strongly attached. But, maybe for you, it is a dilemma that needs to be addressed.

In our family, we don't leave things out just because we plan to get back to the project later.

"There are two kinds of people in the world,
those who think they can and those who think they can't.
And both are right."

7. From the Trenches

KID'S MEMORABILIA

What about your kid's trophies from all of their sporting events? I hate the thought of throwing them out, but the kids are older now, (21/18) and they don't want them. One thing I will suggest to those of you with younger kids. Whenever your kids come home with a project or paper they are proud of, take a picture of them holding it. Even a trophy, had I done this all along, I wouldn't be having this dilemma of what to do with all of this childhood stuff. I'm so bad, I have teeth, hair, shoes, etc. but don't know what belonged to who....

MESSIES ANONYMOUS SLOGAN

Please memorize this slogan and post it on your wall.

The secret to success is making very small, yet very consistent, changes.
