1. Message of the Day

DON'T GIVE AWAY YOUR POWER

Don't give somebody else the ON/OFF button of your determination.

A recovering Messie wrote: I have come a long day and have the desire until my husband says something that hurts me emotionally (concerning the house). Then I feel frozen and the thought of no desire seems to come back. I feel like I am in a never ending cycle.

Whoa, cowgirl! Get off that horse!

You need to dismount in two ways.

  • Quantify his remarks. That means to look at them in an objective way. Keep a log of what he says and number how it affected you on a scale of 1-5, five being the worst. The fact that you are examining the remarks will make them more intellectual and less emotionally hurtful.
  • Decide what to say in response. Make your comments in return unemotional and very different from previous responses. Don't disagree. If he says, "You aren't doing any better than before your started this whole MA program," you may reply with a smile and a shake of your head, "Really! I guess you see things different from me." Then you move on. That way you are putting your opinion on the same level as his. This is only one way to diffuse his comments. You can think of others.

6. Question of The Day

Is there any thing, habit, or idea that you are totally unwilling to give up at this time? You want to change badly. But not at the expense of this one thing. If there were such a thing in your life, what would it be? Identifying it clearly is important for improvement.

INSIGHTS ON HOARDING

Might I throw out the suggestion that in some cases... each thing is a way of HIDING.

HIDING from pain of some sort, or stress of some sort, seems to be behind obesity in most cases. (I hurt: so I will eat and feel better for a little while)
I am talking here about genuine obesity--not "being chubby."

HIDING is also what we end up doing after we live a lifestyle filled with clutter. Hoarding is collecting gone mad it seems. Part of that might be, as we hoard this or that, there is a feeling of ACCOMPLISHMENT or even of "winning" if we acquire something in the realm of what we choose to hoard.

While we are in "the process" of "acquiring" it can be a very heady feeling....and a feeling that HIDES us from whatever is going on in our life. As long as we turn our attention to what seems comforting or exciting...then we can avert our eyes from the boring, difficult or monotonous tasks ahead of us.

Note: Not all Messies are hoarders but most keep too much stuff and the ideas given here may apply.

MESSIES ANONYMOUS SLOGAN

Please memorize this slogan and post it on your wall.

The secret to success is making very small, yet very consistent, changes.

Or to make it short; Baby steps, baby steps in the right direction.

Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness.
