AWARENESS and INSIGHTS

If you are kinetically and tactically oriented, go to model homes or the houses of friends who ave their act together.

Walk through, touching and experiencing the spaces, colors, light, etc.

1. Message of the Day

WHEREVER YOU ARE, BE THERE!

Wake up to your environment. It is easy to walk around the house and not really pay attention to what is going on there. Tuning out the clutter is common among Messies and hinders improvement.

Become alert to the details of what your house looks like.
Notice your own habits. Keep tabs on what your family does.

The way to do that is:

Turn around at the door and deliberately look at a room  you have just finished straightening.

Using an empty toilet paper roll like a spy glass, zero in on counter, dresser tops, and the like. (Pull the drapes if you are doing this at night and the neighbors can see in.)

Slow down. Start training yourself to go more slowly and pay attention to what is around you.

Do not walk through life in a fog. If you are there, pay attention. Participate fully in your own life.

Finally, when you have built order and harmony into your home, bask in the beauty you see around you. Applaud your new found habits and schedule. Take nothing for granted. You are in a wonderful place. Be fully and mindfully alert.

2. Habit of the Day

USE LITTLE MINUTES

Whenever you have a minute or two, do a little something. Dusting, picking up a thing or two, filing a paper, these are things that can be done in a jiffy. Make this habit a part of your overall program and the house will begin magically to
clear up.

3. Family Reminder of the Day

Pick one of these reminders or make one of your own to share with your family each day.

In our family, we use the team concept. Each person does his part to support all.

In our family, we are willing to help others where necessary because we are a team.

4. Quote of the Day

We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

INSIGHTS ABOUT WHY I KEPT MY STUFF

Three more reasons from Carole:

It brought back memories. I have a terrible memory, and I was afraid if I got rid of something, I would forget the person or event that took place that brought back the special memories (like all the matchbooks and menus I
collected from various restaurants whenever we went out with friends).

It was part of my "identity" (see? I'm an artist, a musician, a gardener, a seamstress, etc.) It kept me from feeling that I was a Nobody (I wasn't dealing with my low self esteem issues).

I felt I had to "save the world" by recycling - only the stuff rarely ever made it to the recycling center, it just piled up in the house and garage. Maybe I had
to feel that I was part of the solution and not the problem, and that I wasn't polluting the world (only my house).

(Thanks, Carole. Once we identify our thoughts, we can begin to deal with them.)

MESSIES ANONYMOUS SLOGAN

Please memorize this slogan and post it on your wall.

The secret to success is making very small, yet very consistent, changes.

Or to make it short; Baby steps, baby steps in the right direction.

Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness.
