IN-USE ITEMS and COACHING

We should never lose sight of our overall goal, which in this case is a beautiful and orderly house.  When we see our work in terms of this lofty goal, individual tasks become a means to an end.

1. Message of the Day

No More IN-USE Items!

Put things back where they belong even when you will be using them again soon.
  • If we get a cookbook out to look for a recipe we have not yet found, we tend to leave it out because it is now an IN-USE item.
  • If we are working on addressing cards, we leave out the address book, cards, stamp, and pen because these items have become a special group. They have become IN-USE items.
  • Garden tools which are likely to be used daily are kept separate from other tools because they are IN-USE tools.
This sort of thing can go on ad infinitum. In the mind of the Messie, anything which is being used at the time or may be used in the future earns the right to be left out, separate from the groupings where they are ordinarily kept. This is not a good idea.

Failure to return things to their proper groupings causes much of the clutter found in homes of active and imaginative Messies who have many projects going at one time.

Keep items that are alike together. Etch the adage BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER into your active brain. Determine to change your behavior.

From now on, put the book "in use" back with its flock of other books on the shelf. Put tools back with their flock in the tool box, shed, or shelf before moving on.

You will be surprised at how eliminating the IN-USE items from sitting around waiting to be revisited will clear your house of clutter.

In short, STOW AS YOU GO!

2. Habit of the Day

Be sure you return things to the proper storage place ON A TIMELY BASIS (that means really quick.)
--------------------------------------------

3. Family Reminder of the Day

In our family, we push our chairs up to the table when we leave.

In our family, we use one bath towel for a week.

In our family, we change our bed sheets every two weeks.

4. Quote of the Day

All glory comes from daring to begin.

5. Question of The Day

Do you have a chronic habit of leaving things out until you return to the project? Choose one area in which you will begin to return items rather than leave them out to be used later.

7. From the Trenches

Subject: The Organizer Lady and the Coach

I don't consider myself too far gone in the way of messiness, although I have done occasionally time with that problem. Nonetheless I have found The Organizer Lady posts to be motivating in other areas of my life. If anyone would try any one of the tips, anyone could start making any changes they desire. It's the dream that is important. I am a professional coach and often say this to people for what ever it's worth, It's by Don Schula, former NFL coach,

"Practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent and we all get the same 24 hours a day".

Start to practice good thoughts about yourself for only one minute a day, and realize that what you practice is what you become. One minute to your health.
(Thanks, Judith)

MESSIES ANONYMOUS SLOGAN

Please memorize this slogan and post it on your wall.

The secret to success is making very small, yet very consistent, changes.

Or to make it short, "Baby steps, baby steps" in the right direction.

"Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness."
