Clutter is not just the stuff on your floor. It is anything that stands between you and the life you want to be living.

1. Message of the Day
FOCUS ON FOCUSING
Many, if not most, of us who are Messies have a problem of maintaining attention to what we are doing. Maybe it is a simple as failing to close doors and drawers after we use them. Maybe we abandon a job when it is half finished. Sometimes lack of focus causes us to leave our purse or credit card at a
check-out counter. Sometimes we are forgetful. And, of course, being distracted away from what we are doing and failing to return to it is classic for those who have difficulty maintaining focus.
All of these problems give birth to mega problems with messes. Our lives unravel organizationally when they are characterized by lack of attention to details and systems we must focus on if we are to live orderly lives.
What can you do about this problem?
The first is to recognize and embrace how troublesome it is in our lives. Don't give yourself permission to continue this behavior by saying you are just flighty
by nature.
Next begin to make small habit changes.
- Slow down. Deliberately tell yourself that you do not need to rush.
- Talk out loud to yourself at key points (not necessarily in public.) Verbalizing focuses attention.
- Put up visual prompts such as signs reminding you what to do.
- Change a few habits such as not leaving the payment counter of a store until you have put your credit card, check book, receipt, or whatever where it belongs. It is okay for the person behind you to wait a moment while you do this.
- Simplify your life. Take on fewer activities. Buy fewer goods. Consolidate tasks. In general, simplify your life wherever possible.
Choose a few of these steps. Take them seriously and you will begin to find that it is possible to focus on focusing. Your life, and house, will be the better for it.

7. From the Trenches
IN CONTROL
Last night, my daughter and her new husband came for dinner..... normally I freak out, having somebody over makes me soooo nervous. I quickly cleaned the kitchen (while everybody was swimming about 25-30 minutes), cooked dinner AND washed the pans and skillet immediately after cooking. Because there weren't a bunch of greasy yucky pans to do, the load seemed much smaller, so my husband and oldest son did the dishes. I am waking up to a clean kitchen and clean dishes! Yahoo!! AND I even knew what I was going
to cook for dinner the night before, which caused me to do a little dance..... that doesn't usually happen.... but it felt sooooo good to be able to say, "want to stay for dinner?" Just like June Cleaver!! tonight, stuffed red bell peppers..... I think they'll be over again, twice in a row.... that is a record for me! And the kitchen is already cleaned, I just have to maintain it for the rest of the day. I can do that - right?!

MESSIES ANONYMOUS SLOGANS
Please memorize this slogan and post it on your wall.
The secret to success is making very small, yet very consistent, changes.
Or to make it short; Baby steps, baby steps in the right direction.
Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness.
