SERENITY PRAYER and DISHES

Try to keep the floor as bare as possible.
It's easier to keep clean that way and looks
much neater.

1. Message of the Day

"God give us the grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed;
Courage to change the things that should be changed; And the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other."

Reinhold Niebuhr (Original Serenity Prayer)

Let's look at this prayer, the original from which the shorter version used by most anonymous groups was adapted. Let's start from the end and work back to the beginning.

In this prayer we ask for three things: First we need WISDOM or discernment as we look at our struggle with clutter. What actions should we take? What should we accept as a part of the situation which will not change, at least for now?

Perhaps most of all we need COURAGE to change the things in our life that bog us down. Sometimes that means changing ourselves. Concentrate on those things
that we can alter.

Finally we need GRACE or SERENITY to accept things that are out of our control. Don't waste time and energy on these.

2. Did You Know?

3. Habit of the Day

CLEAN AS YOU GO

Keep short accounts by putting things up as you work. As you cook, wash and dry your pots, pans, etc. or put them in the dishwasher as you go.

As you do a project, keep your tools and pieces corralled and put them away immediately.

When you clean, return cleaning products and tools immediately. Otherwise you will leave more mess behind than you clean up.
--------------------------------------

4. Family Reminder of the Day

Pick one of these reminders or make one of your own to share with your family each day.

In our family, we pay attention to maintaining beauty.

In our family, we push our chairs up to the table when we leave.
--------------------------------------

5. Quote of the Day

"Housekeeping ain't no joke."

Louisa May Alcott
--------------------------------------

6. Question of the Day

Don Aslett says,

"I don't want to shock you, but I believe in wearing work clothes a week, not a day." (How to Do 1000 Things at Once)

Wearing less clothes cuts down on laundry. The question of the day asks for your response to Don Aslett's idea AND any ideas you have for cutting down on laundry.

DIRTY DISHES PROBLEM SOLVED

This is an exchange of a problem and possible
solution between two Messies.

Problem:
I don't think I will ever be able to keep up with the dishes, because I just hate it so much.
It gets piled up, and then my 80 year old father does it and I feel totally guilty. I am seriously considering giving everyone just ONE place setting, and hiding everything else. That way, you have to wash your dirty dish before you can eat again!

Possible solution:

Teresa, I did just that. There are only two of us in the house and we never have guests over for dinner (it is a goal, but...) Anyway, I now have just 4 place settings and 8 glasses, so even if the dishes get "piled up" there is not much to get piled. This may
not work for everyone, but it works for me. Now if I could just learn how to cook using fewer pots and pans!

When you have a problem, look for a solution. Often, as in this case, simplifying is a possibility.

8. Extra Help
Does your clutter secret keep you isolated?
Mary said, “I was just too embarrassed to come into this class at first, but I sure am glad I did!”
Now, Organizing Mastery is my weekly organizing time… and I get so much done!

MESSIES ANONYMOUS SLOGAN

Please memorize this slogan and post it on your wall.

The secret to success is making very small, yet very consistent, changes.

Or to make it short; Baby steps, baby steps in the right direction.

Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness.
