MANY OPTIONS and CLOSETS

Taken to an extreme, sentimentality causes messes.
For the sake of order in our lives, be selective and willing to let some of those heartwarming memorabilia go.

1. Message of the Day

COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM OF IMPROVEMENT

Struggling to stay organized is a lifelong pursuit for those of us to whom it does not come easily. We need to keep focused on the topic. The great thing is that in today's world we have many options as we seek to find inspiration and motivation to keep ourselves flying high.

Here are some tips on how to continue.

Books - Visit bookstores and libraries. Read one each quarter or at least one a year. Flip through several until one appeals to you. Even if you don't read every chapter, dip into the areas that interest you. Maybe just read in the bookstore or library to keep your home free of more books. You are sure to find something to energize you and improve your efforts. Check out the various tools that M.A. offers at http://www.messies.com

Magazines - Beautiful, helpful pictures and short, pithy articles keep you inspired and interested in improving. Check out the organizing help now offered regularly in women's magazines. Then discard the magazine quickly. Just because it is good doesn't mean it is good for you to keep it. Or, just keep the page or picture that inspires you!

Internet - Google can lead you to many helpful organizing sites. Choose a favorite or two that can offer you the kind of help you want. On-line support groups available at
https://sites.google.com/view/messies-anonymous/home make it possible for anybody with a computer and internet access to get immediate help from others who have the same goals.

Other helps -

- Maybe there is a local support group in your area. Join it.

- Look around for classes on how to get organized.
These are often associated with local schools in your area.

- Hire a professional organizer or a helper you know who has an interest in organizing and would be willing to step in to give you a hand.
http://www.napo.net

- Keep your eyes open for internet classes or teleconferences about organizing.

But one word of caution is in order. Keep focused. Don't just learn, DO! Choose carefully where you are going to spend your time and energy. Keep your focus on changing your behavior in your house. The other things are only valuable as they help you ramp up your energy and determination and JUST DO IT!

In our family, we put what we need the next day by the front door the night before.

In our family, we don't drop our things when we come in the door. We take them and put them where they belong.

7. From the Trenches

Would you believe that I got a closet put together yesterday? I had the day off of work, and I got my dad to help. We worked all day. I painted and covered shelves with contact paper. We put up brackets and clips, and I made a run to Target to get storage containers.

But when I was done, my mom had a place for photos and mementos (which used to be in a huge box and are now in easily accessible small photo boxes that she can organize
later), fabric for sewing projects, lampshades for who knows what, and our sleeping bags.

Granted, it seems like a big mix of stuff, but I just went with figuring out where to put stuff that doesn't really have a designated place. Now it does, and it looks great!
