H.A.L.T. and DIRTY DISHES

More than willpower and discipline, Messies need focus.

Messies are not generally focused on what they want to do in the house. They only want things better in some foggy sense. If you are able to focus on what it is you want to
do for your house, the house will begin to change automatically. The discipline and willpower will come if they are needed.

1. Message of the Day

H.A.L.T.

An acronyms often used in twelve step groups uses the word H-A-L-T. I have adjusted it somewhat to meet our needs. Note what the letters stand for. When things are not going well, halt and ask yourself if any of these are factors you need to correct.

Do not allow yourself to become too:

H-ungry - Meet your basic needs for good food and water.

A-ngry - Don't allow your emotions of any kind to hinder you.

L-onely - Don't make THINGS your companions. Prepare your house for personal friends. Invite people over.

T-ired - Take care of yourself physically in whatever way you need to. Get to bed on time.
-------------------------------

2. Habit of the Day

Commit for just this one day.

Look at your house in the way a stranger would.

Stand at the door of each room and look at the room as though for the first time. Is there anything, including furniture, you could remove? Change? Rearrange?

3. Family Reminder of the Day

Pick one of these reminders or make one of your own to share with your family each day.

In our family, we push our chairs up to the table when we leave.

In our family, we use one bath towel for a week.

In our family, we change our bed sheets every two weeks.

4. Quote of the Day

A man is rich in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone.

Henry David Thoreau

Let us increase our riches by holding our belongings loosely.

6. From the Trenches

DIRTY DISHES

Dirty dishes in the sink cast an ugly mood over the whole house. This is a poem from the Messies Talk support group. You may want to post it in the kitchen to remind you of how distressing dirty dishes can become.

Dirty dishes, a horrible plight,
Makes you & me just want to take flight!
But when you return it's an uglier sight,
Until they are done we'll be all uptight.
So dish soap in hand we take up the fight!
The battle won, it's all clear & bright!!!

MESSIES ANONYMOUS SLOGAN

Please memorize this slogan and post it on your wall.

The secret to success is making very small, yet very consistent, changes.

Or to make it short, "Baby steps, baby steps" in the right direction.

"Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness."
