HOUSE GUESTS and SCHEDULE

We should bring things into our houses only because we planned for them and because we need them.

Sometimes, though, we act impulsively (and therefore contribute to our struggle to create an organized, beautiful home!) because of these alluring four-letter words:

free, sale, cute, good, and nice.

Watch Those Four-Letter Words!

1. Message of the Day

ENTERTAINING AND HOUSE GUESTS

Invite folks in.

Having people into the house is one of the biggest issues with Messies. It is important in two ways.

It acts as a reality check for us. When we know someone is coming in, we look at the house differently and see things we never see when we are home alone.

It acts as a motivator. We are willing to do things for them that we do not have interest or ability to do for ourselves.

But there is a hidden problem. Sometimes we have kept people out for so long that we no longer feel comfortable with anyone in our house even when it is nice. Take courage. When you are ready, invite someone you feel comfortable with over. Keep inviting folks until you are even more comfortable. You owe it to yourself.

Entertaining others in the context of our home, which is our larger self, is an important part of our vital humanness.

2. Habit of the Day

Commit for just this one day.

FOLLOW THE RULE OF TEN (AMBIVALENCE BOX THINGS)

Gather ten things you know you should get rid of but don't want to. Put them in an Ambivalence Box which you store out of the way. Put a date on the box when you will move it out of the house. You may retrieve an item you must up until that day. On that date,  however, the box is forever sealed to you and the box
of things is given away.

4. Family Reminder of the Day

Pick one of these reminders or make one of your own to share with your family each day.

In our family, we flush the toilet after each use.

In our family, each person is responsible to wash, fold and put away his or her own clothes regularly.

In our family, we say "please" and "thank you" a lot.

5. Quote of the Day

"Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it; boldness has genius, power, and magic in it."

Goethe

7. From the Trenches by a new messie

Messies Anonymous changed my home in a few short weeks. I've been a messie all my life and paper/clutter is my enemy. Although I cleaned the house, it always  seemed to get messie just as soon as I was done. So with the Organizer Lady tips the last 6 weeks and finding a way to use it with my family, I came up with a schedule which I post by the phone and try to follow diligently every
day. It has made a HUGE difference in our home and in my state of mind. My mom's a cleanie and her methods never worked for me. But my method now works for us.

MESSIES ANONYMOUS SLOGAN

Please memorize this slogan and post it on your wall.

The secret to success is making very small, yet very consistent, changes.

Or to make it short, "Baby steps, baby steps" in the right direction.

"Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness."
