TRICKY PROBLEMS and FAMILY BACKGROUND

TRICKY PROBLEMS and FAMILY BACKGROUND We should bring things into our houses only because we planned for them and we need them. Sometimes, though, we act impulsively (and therefore contribute to our struggle to create an organized, beautiful home!) because of these alluring four-letter words: free, sale, cute, good, and nice. Watch Those Four-Letter Words! Sandra Felton, THE ORGANIZER LADY® -------------------------------- Contents of New Ideas for Today 1. Message of the Day 2. Did You Know? 3. Habit of the Day 4. Message of the Day KEEP ON TOP OF THE TRICKY PROBLEMS Jobs come in two categories, habitual and occasional. Habitual - Much of the Messies Anonymous program is geared to scheduling and doing regular jobs. If we have a plan and keep to it more or less on a regular basis, our houses begin to improve. AND it will be maintained on a daily basis. Occasional - But there is a fly in the ointment! The order and beauty in our house can be tripped up by out-of-the-blue dis-organizational problems if we are not prepared for them. They are things like: an unexpected gift that needs to be hung or stored; new sporting or kitchen equipment we have no place for; an additional job that becomes our responsibility; something breaks, leaks, or spills. Keep an eye open and you will see a lot of those jobs that sneak up on an irregular basis Keep on top of those tricky problems. -------------------------------------- 2. Did You Know? When I was a kid, my mother used to call me "lazy" and ridicule me in front of other people (even AFTER I got my act together, she still insisted I was a slob). My sister, who was jealous of me, loved to chime in. I finally got to where "I didn't care." Of course, I hated the mess that was piling up around me, but I was afraid that IF I had attempted to clean my room, I would hear sarcastic comments such as, "It's about TIME you cleaned your pigsty" or that maybe in some warped way, my sister would think that all her rude comments was what motivated me to clean my room, so I was afraid that it would reinforce her nasty behavior. I was caught between a rock and a hard spot. I just chose to "numb out this part of my life." When I got married, and my cleanie husband had to live with my handicap, and the little suggestions he made hurt my feelings. I felt that he was being like my mother and sister, and in some way "agreeing with them" that I was a useless slob. It took me a while to come to terms with the fact that I lived in a dysfunctional family, and that I was placed in a "role" (my older sister was "The Bossy One", I was the "Lazy Slob" and my younger sister was "The Tomboy") that has taken me decades to break out of. Even after I had a better self-image, my dysfunctional family STILL tries to cast me in that role. I had to finally realize that I had to stop living for THEIR approval, and do this for me and for my immediate family, who loved me and was willing to help me. (Thanks one more time to Carol.) --------------------------------------- 10. More Info This is a simple program. We stick with the basics as they are presented in these messages. Keep reading. The secret to success is making very small, yet very consistent, changes. Or to make it short; Baby steps, baby steps in the right direction. Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness.
