1. Message of the Day -
Helping Others AVOID "THE NEED TO BE NEEDED" Everybody wants to be needed to
some extent. We feel a sense of satisfaction when we can support and help
others. It is one of the satisfactions of motherhood. Helping others connects us
to them. It is a relationship builder. But things can go overboard in this area.
Sometimes clutter and disorganization are the result of a poor approach to this
legitimate desire. - Clutter - Because we want to provide for others we keep
things for distribution. Those who do that run the risk of having piles of
dormant "stuff" sitting around the house awaiting distribution. We store
discarded clothing awaiting "just the right person" instead of ushering it
speedily down to the nearest local charity. We keep piles of cutouts of
newspaper articles with important information that needs to be disseminated to
interested individuals. We salvage strange and unique items that are
irreplaceable. We save them from being lost to posterity. All of these things
are kept just in case somebody may have a use for them in the future. Because we
want to be able to meet their needs, we accumulate clutter. - Keeper of
Knowledge - Family members who live in a messy house often can't find what they
need. This opens the door for Mom Super Helper to fly to the rescue. "Where is
the hammer, honey?" "Mom, where are my socks?" "Don't we have a measuring cup
around here somewhere?" And the reply to these kinds of questions many times a
day is, "Just a minute, I'll get it for you", or "I'll help you find it". Mom
may not know exactly where it is but she has more of an idea than the hapless
family trying to live in all this confusion. So mom is the hero. She may become
exhausted and exasperated with their demands from time to time. But deep down,
she is pleased to be indispensable. The family deserves better than being forced
to be dependent for help. Become essential and vital to the family dynamics by
setting up an organized house where things needed are consistently in a logical
place where everybody can function as capable individuals. Teach them where to
find -- and to return -- items they need. Encourage habits of order. That is a
much higher level of helpfulness than using clutter as an excuse to help.

3. Habit of the Day - CLEAN AS YOU GO
Keep short accounts on putting things up as you work. As you cook, wash and dry
your pots, pans, etc. or put them in the dishwasher as you go. As you do a
project, keep your tools and pieces corralled and put them away immediately.
When you clean, return cleaning products and tools immediately. Otherwise you
will leave more mess behind than you clean up.
--------------------------------------
4. Family Reminder of the Day
In our family, we pay attention to maintaining beauty. In our family, we push our
chairs up to the table when we leave.

5. Quote of the Day
There is no defeat except in no longer trying. There is no
defeat save within, no really insurmountable barrier, save our own inherent
weakness of purpose. Elbert Hubbard

7. From the Trenches - IT CAN BE DONE!
Dear MA, Thank you, thank you, thank you! It was over a hundred degrees outside
today when our church group had planned to have our monthly picnic. We are a
group of young parents with small children; most are under age 4. It was just
too hot for small children to be outside so I volunteered our house to over 20
people! We had about 30 minutes before the guests arrived to clean up the dog
messes and wash a few dishes, but the rest of the house was clean and
presentable! It felt so good when my best friend said "I would never be able to
volunteer my house like that". I know that a few months ago I would have said
the same. Thank you MA for everything! I do so appreciate the daily reminders
and inspiration. I have a 3 year old and a 4 month old, so it's been a little
difficult, but I am proof today that it can be done! Jackie
