HOW-TO FOR SETTING GOALS

SET GOALS concerning the house. Is your desire to:
  1. Get a particular area organized?
  2. Get the whole house under control?
  3. Maintain the house?
  4. Establish new habits?
The key to reaching goals is:
  • Be specific and detailed.
  • Write it down.
  • Be accountable to someone or a group (like an M.A. group.)
  • Report your progress regularly.

ON LINE CLUTTER BUDDIES HELP EACH OTHER

Hello!
I need someone to look after my work in the bedroom, because if I do it alone, I do it NOT :( My bedroom is full of trash, paper and clothes (dirty and clean),
but I make my bed every Day! :) I have to clean all from the carpet, so that i can see this wonderful color (Deep Blue) again.
Please Help me.
THANKS Beate

Beate, Would you like to be clutter buddies to check on each others progress in the bedrooms? Mine is terrible, too. I have a lot to do there. I am just worried mine will take longer than yours if we start to compare. I have clean laundry, baby stuff, papers from when I used to just take them all off my desk to hide them, etc. I feel so bad because I am sharing with my kids, and it is so messy. I finally am working on it though! A little bit each day. We could check in once a week or more, if you want to.

SHARING OURSELVES

One of the most satisfying aspects of our humanness is sharing ourselves with others. Our spirits find fulfillment when we connect in meaningful ways with family, friends, and others. But when we are ashamed about our clutter, we isolate ourselves both as individuals and in our homes.

When our lives clear up, we are happily able to open up in a new way. That renewed connectedness is one of the wonderful spin-offs of the changes we make in Messies Anonymous.

PLANS AND PROGRESS

My mom was a messie too and she passed away last year so I have 2 houses to dejunk. I have 2 messie teenagers and I used to think that the kids were the problem before I read and started working on Sandra's suggestions. Putting junk in Banker's Boxes helped me a lot because out of sight, out of mind, soon I'll have the will to file it. decide where it should go, or just throw it out! And in the meantime some glorious space has emerged that once was cluttered.

The Take-offs and Landings have helped a lot, too. Whenever I can get 1 or both of my kids to do a 10-minute tidy, I feel like I've accomplished a lot in just a little time and effort. It also reinforces the awareness for me of little jobs that can be done and teaches my kids that they can make a difference
without me nagging them or assigning chores.

1. Message of the Day

JUST READ IT! THEN DO IT!

Why do we read this every day in whole or in part even though there is repetition? Because repetition is the key to change. Messages on The Organizer Lady do not stray far from the basics, the important essentials, needed for change.

As we integrate each one of these parts into our lives ever so slowly day by day our lives will change dramatically even when we are not fully aware of it. You are brainwashing yourself for the good. Trust me. This is true and it is very good.

3. Habit of the Day

Make your bed every day, every day, every day. It doesn't have to be perfect, just done. No more lumpy, messy sheets, pillows, and covers casting a pall over the whole house. Instead, you will have a beautiful neat aura emanating from the bedroom.

If it takes you over a minute and a half on a slow day, you need to revamp your system.

SUCCESSFUL COPING

I am a messy at heart. I have finished the decluttering of my home and I can now get my house in order in two hours with children under foot.

I have developed coping techniques for day to day struggles. I have learned that my house does not have to be perfect in order for it to be presentable. I have four young children...perfection is out of the question.

I have my flipper set up in such a way that cleaning is easy now.

So, in answer to Dyana's question to me...yes.I am a messy. But, now the hard stuff is done.

I can do sewing and crafts without feeling like I am committing a crime against my family. I can go to yard sales and enjoy them. I can sit down and spend time doing fun things with my children.

I have reached my goals.

(Thanks to Jennifer)

1. Message of the Day

BOUNDARIES

The world is full of so many interesting things to do that it is hard to say no to them. Wonderful activities abound. There are many things to do that are fun, educational, exciting, creative and helpful. The excitement of participating lures us to participate. Sometimes friends or family encourage us to join in.

But wait! Opportunities are unlimited but time is not. Nor is energy. This tension makes it imperative for us to make deliberate, thoughtful, and (let's face it) hard decisions to decline some or many of these wonderful things to do.

The best way to do this is to determine ahead of time what three or so areas of life you feel are really important. Write them down so they will be concrete and remembered. Post them on the refrigerator or by the phone. Eliminate activities
that don't contribute to those areas. When somebody suggests outside these parameters, either say NO or, if that is too difficult, tell them you need to think or pray about it. After you have rallied your determination, say NO, I CAN'T. I'M SORRY. Explaining is not necessary. This is called setting boundaries. And it is very, very healthy.

3. Habit of the Day

FOLLOW THE RULE OF TEN (THROW AWAY THINGS)

Gather ten things to throw away. Get them in the trash immediately. Sometimes we give away things but today we are asked to just toss them out. Surely there are ten things that can hit the trash can today.
--------------------------------------

4. Family Reminder of the Day

In our family, we strive to complete projects and clean up expeditiously.

In our family, the person who uses the last sheet of toilet paper puts a new roll on the roller.
--------------------------------------

5. Quote of the Day

At some point in life the world's beauty becomes enough. You don't need to photograph, paint, or even remember it. It is enough. No record of it needs to be  kept, and you don't need someone to share it with or tell it to. When that
happens--that letting go--you let go because you can.

In their book, Time for Life (p.91), Robinson and Godbey quoted the novelist Toni Morrison's book, Let Go.

7. From the Trenches

It's much BETTER to clean to KEEP UP than it is to clean to CATCH UP!

It's not *always* easier, more convenient, less tiring, but it is BETTER I think. Why? Because if we KEEP UP, then we get to avoid "the big mess is back" frustration and disheartened feelings
  • procrastinating the big job of catching up,
  • the exhaustion we feel after all the work of catching up,
  • the repercussions of the housework vacations we grant ourselves after the above.
Keeping up gets boring FOR A WHILE! After the "this is hard" phase, and the "I can do this better" improvement phase, and the "this is boring" phase, comes the phase where we can mindlessly address those normal, ordinary, *routine* tasks which our houses need every day; at least, that's what I've found. The catch is that we have to find each of our problem areas and go through the process with them all. Tiring, boring, frustrating by itself, but ultimately rewarding because you achieve an organized life.

Thanks to Gail.
