1. Message of the Day

SOW THE ACTION! REAP THE RESULT!

You choose the action and the result happens automatically.

Look around. What you see is the result of actions you have chosen to do some time in the past. Every piece of paper, every pile of clutter, every item of clothing  out of place, and every other disorganized area of the house (and office) is the result of choices made one moment after another in the past. Every clean surface, every thing that is in its place, every beautiful spot follows the same pattern.

This is both bad news and good news. It is amazing the difference small, incremental habits make---FOR BOTH CLUTTER AND NEATNESS.

The message is clear and simple.
Act your way out of disorder.
Clutter will fall away like magic.

LOOK BACK, REALLY LOOK BACK!

When you finish an area or room, go to the door, turn around, and focus on seeing what you have done. Make yourself tune in visually.

Hint: Once the room is ready, take and post a snapshot in the room to show how it should be maintained. Maybe even post it at the door. Good for reminding kids what you want.

Is there any thing, habit, or idea that you are totally unwilling to give up at this time?

You want to change badly. But not at the expense of this one thing. If there were such a thing in your life, what would it be? Identifying it clearly is important for improvement.

HANDLING PAPER

Why not use filing cabinets? They're not very expensive. Walmart, and lots of other places, sell them. For me, they're a good investment in saved time and energy, and peace of mind. I have a big problem with papers. The main one is that I don't like to file. :) So, I try to make it as easy as possible. Here are a few ideas that are working for me.

I have a 2 drawer next to the computer, and 2 more in a spare bedroom closet.

The first file in the top drawer is for receipts. I can just drop them straight into the file folder, and since it's so accessible, I actually do it. So if I need to
return something, the receipt is easy to find. (Which beats my previous system of turning the house upside down, searching for receipts. :)

The second file is local restaurant menus. When I go into town, I can just pull out a menu, call ahead, and save time by picking up food that's ready to go. The file cabinet is right next to the phone, so it's easy to just drop the menu right back into the file. Financial information--The budget/bills, current living expenses, bank statements, credit card information, savings and debt,
insurance, etc., is next, in the top drawer, so that it's easy to get to. Automobile is behind that, then things are alphabetized from there.

At the end of the fiscal year, I take out the financial folders and rotate them to top drawer of the bedroom filing cabinet, and set up new file folders for the new year.

On balancing the checkbook, I usually try to do that the day they come in, so it only takes a few minutes, and I don't have to sweat checks bouncing, and those nasty fees. I try to write as few checks as possible, too, which also
makes the checking account easier to balance.

I hope this helps someone.

1. Message of the Day

Losing Weight/Keeping House

These two have a lot in common. Both require first of all an awareness we need to make a change accompanied by a burning determination to do so. Then both require awareness of what we need to do differently. Change in the area of improving our houses requires us to wake up to "hot spots" in the house, destructive behaviors, and information on how to do the job of organizing. The good part is that improving the house is, in a way, easier than losing weight because it is less complex. Follow the guidelines given by Messies Anonymous and get the support you need to do it. When you slip, pick yourself up and start again. Slowly but surely, the house will change.

It is not easy to reach either goal. Both require the hardest of all activities for real success --- long term behavior change. But it can be done. Many formerly
messy houses, now neat, can testify to that!
Yours can change, too!

5. Quote of the Day

Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off bow lines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, dream, discover!

Mark Twain

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the fact that you missed out on living a normal life, spent time struggling with the problem, and could not have friends over freely. So throw off the lines that bind you to the problem and sail away from the old way of life. Be brave, set your sail, and bravely head for the order and beauty just over the horizon.

Limits on Pets

The other night I bought a Bissell hand held "spot scrubber" at Walmart with the Pet odor solution. SO FAR, it removes spots and smells beautifully...but I suspect it's only good for up to the minute clean, probably not so hot on older, larger problems. But, since I'm in a small apartment now and when we get home, everything will be new, it should help me keep up and not get behind. Also, my attitude toward my furbabies has changed. I love them dearly, but I will no longer allow them to make my environment a poop pile. No more 12-13 cats and how many dogs....Limits, boundaries, and hard choices ahead. But, the house smells *SO* good...

1. Message of the Day

FOUR WISE SECRETS

Lately I've been spending more time with my forever-neat ninety year old mother. She has just moved into a nursing home in order to be near me. I've had a chance to see in a new way what secrets have kept her easily neat and
organized all of her life. Her hearing is very poor and her memory is fading but the characteristics of a lifetime which have given her a consistently lovely
and organized home are still with her.

For instance, I used a sugar packet and put the empty envelope on a table. "Put that on the tray, honey," she said casually. Her first secret is: She keeps on top of things. Things are not put up later. They are kept up as she goes.

Her second secret is she is visually alert and sensitive. If anything is out of place as in trash, empty boxes, or clothes not hung up, she sets about to rectify the situation. She does not tolerate visual disorder well.

She is in a wheel chair so her ability to take care of things is limited. "Let me get someone in here to take care of that," she says when something needs to
be thrown away. And she flags down an attendant to do it. Her third secret is that she knows what she wants and she does not hesitate to ask for help to get it.

Finally, she keeps only what she needs and will use. She lost an earring. "Get rid of the other one," she said. "Only keep what you can use."

If I have given you the impression that she is a detail person who is driving everybody crazy trying to keep her room neat, I have given you exactly the wrong impression. The funny thing is that she is so relaxed and casual
about it that you hardly notice what she is doing. It is only because I have listened and watched carefully that I have noticed how she operates.

Her habits grow out out of her personal characteristics. For ninety years she has lived an effortlessly organized life because what she does works. Boy, do those secrets work!

3. Habit of the Day

FOLLOW THE RULE OF TEN (AMBIVALENCE BOX THINGS)

Gather ten things you know you should get rid of but don't want to. Put them in an Ambivalence box which you store out of the way. Put a date on the box when you will move it out of the house. You may retrieve an item you must up until that day. On that date, however, the box is forever sealed to you and the box of things is given away.

having less in our lives. Ummmmm

7. From the Trenches

ENTERTAINING

I finally did it today. For the first time in over a year, I had a friend over for coffee. My house is not anywhere near perfect, but the kitchen was clean
(and so was the coffee pot!), and the dining room table was cleared and the bathroom wasn't gross. Fortunately my friend can be a clutterbug herself,
so she didn't mind the laundry hampers and magazine piles in the living room.

I have found that my messy lifestyle has definitely held my social life back. I would love to invite people over for dinner, but I am too embarrassed to do so.
When I was growing up, I had to give my OCD cleanie dad (whom I love dearly) at least one week's notice just to have a friend over to watch a movie, because the house had to be perfect before anyone could come into the house. I finally gave up because I could never meet his expectations. He has only been in my house twice since we moved into it, even though we liveonly about ten minutes away. I am now trying to come to some place in the middle. I think about the opportunities I have lost, and I don't want to put my life off any longer because of my pack-rat disorganization.
