EASY and SAVING

Three powerful words. when I am tempted to procrastinate
doing a little something like hanging up a jacket, emptying
the trash,  spending 15 minutes neatening, my three words
are these:

"Oh! why not?"

Works for me. What are yours?

EASE OF RETURN AND RETRIEVAL

Ask yourself two questions as you organize your storage.

  1. Will this item be easy to return?
  2. Will this item be easy to get out?

If what you need is hard to reach when you need to  retrieve it -- you will frustrate yourself. If what  you have gotten out is difficult to return you will be tempted to leave it out rather than struggle to  put it back.

Several secrets are important:
  • Do not crowd your items into storage space. It is hard to work with jammed in things.
  • Put your grouped items into baskets and label the baskets with bold print (and maybe a picture especially if you have kids)so you will know where things are located.
  • Put the baskets on shelves. Make your items easy to return and retrieve.
Your organizational life will benefit.

7. From the Trenches

SAVING THE LAST LITTLE BIT

I find myself panicking when I use the last of something, like there HAS to be a replacement. It's taking some huge efforts on my part to actually USE the last of the shampoo and just throw the bottle out. Not save it for next time when adding water can extend it or whatever. I don't know why it's so hard to throw out a shampoo bottle, but I am using up stuff that has 1 or 2 shampoos left right now and throwing them away. The better the product is, the harder it is to use it up...kind of like I save it for those 'just In case' days where I might want to look good or whatever. I do the same in the kitchen, I hate to eat the last of
something, even though I live alone and end up throwing it away. At least the food stuff I understand from being raised in a large family where it was considered rude to eat the last piece of cake or whatever without asking others
if they had a piece. But it's just me here, and more stuff goes to waste out of this idea of not wanting to waste it by using it.

(Thanks, Tam)

DISPOSABLES

Manufacturers are making new products that may work out really well for Messies and the way they like to do things. I'm talking about the towelettes or wipes that come in a plastic box or canister and are easy to pop out like a tissue. While it is not perfect, they simplify the whole process of cleaning in a way that works for many and provide the variety that Messies enjoy.

This approach makes it easy to start. Messies often get stuck in the process of getting out the equipment, finding the rag and proper cleaner, mixing it, and doing whatever else necessary to do a wipe up job. With the little canister sitting out on the counter, that step is eliminated and the Messie is free to
impulsively and quickly wipe up the area.

This approach makes it easy to stop. When the job is done the used wipe is disposed of responsibly. Nothing could be simpler. No rag to wash, no water to dispose of, to dust to shake outside in the air.

They are not the total answer to cleaning. But I betcha if you (and your family!) keep those little jobbies readily at hand and use them more or less regularly, the house will take on an overall brighter shine.

3. Habit of the Day

Keep short accounts on putting things up as you work.
(M.A. Newest Motto is STOW AS YOU GO!)

As you cook, wash and dry your pots, pans, etc. or put them in the dishwasher as you go.

As you do a project, keep your tools and pieces corralled and put them away immediately.

When you clean, return cleaning products and tools immediately. Otherwise you will leave more mess behind than you clean up.

4. Family Reminder of the Day

7. From the Trenches

To someone who buys in bulk:

My first suggestion is to STOP buying in bulk, if you aren't going to use it very quickly. All that does is add more clutter to an already small area. I understand
that you don't want to waste the money that you have put into buying these extra products you have bought, so why not think about making up a few gift baskets with the shampoos and whatnot?

FULFILL YOUR DESTINY

Your life is significant. You have an important reason for being in the world. Is your struggle with clutter keeping you from fulfilling your higher calling? For
many of us, this business of clutter is draining the life blood from the important things in our lives. It may be eating into the core of our significance. Is the clutter worth it? Are the careless habits worth it?  thousand times, no. In our best minds, we see the truth. What we have to do in this life is w-a-a-a-y too
important to mess up with messy living.

7. From the Trenches

Today, I have a new attitude about my home, after 48 years of living on this earth, most of it in clutter. I have had a de-cluttered home for 24 hours now. I completed Phase 1 of my abode transformation project yesterday,  transforming 1,050 square feet of knee-deep, wall-to-wall clutter to newly arranged furniture and new designated activities for each room and a clear floor with all my
possessions boxed and shelved.

I took 4.5 months of working every free waking moment to complete Phase 1, putting up with much resistance, anger, fear, confusion, and indecision. I learned how to talk to myself again, how to ask my feelings what they want, in addition to asking my logic what it wants. All the time, visualizing the shining beacon of Phase 1 of this abode transformation project being accomplished.

Looking at the now clear floor, the new, finally-functional placement of my furniture, and the now easy-to-sort possession boxes:

I now feel like I am starting my life.

I now wonder why it has taken 48 years.

(Thanks to Rozwin)

YOU NEED TO PLAY

Humans benefit from purposeless, enjoyable activities. Time you spend in play activities will make you healthier and happier. It will refresh you for a more productive and enriched life.

What does this have to do with organizing? A house and life in order enables us to engage in spontaneous fun activities. In turn, fun will strengthen you to go back to work with vigor.

Recent studies spotlight the significant importance of playing throughout the life cycle.

Don't deprive yourself of the broadness of recreational activities because your house is not ready to invite others in for fun activities or because you don't think you can take time from cleaning to go out and have fun.

"There's never time to put it away,

Actually it takes LONGER to look for it than to return it to its home where you can find it easily. Take a few more seconds to put it where it belongs. Make sure you group things together with other friends of the same kind.  Put all sewing things together, all rain protection items, all tools, etc. Then you can know where things go. And can be found.

MOTIVATION SUCCESS PLAN

Hi Sisters!
A friend, who is not on this list, and who I write daily, also wants to get her house in order. She is also a quilter, like me. We've both decided that we are spending way too much time on the computer, and we need to spend more
time on our homes. We decided to try something, and for the last two days, we've been doing it, and it has WORKED.

We decided that we cannot get on the computer in the morning until we have cleaned our homes for one hour, wherever it is needed, PLUS worked on at least one of our hated dreaded chores we've been procrastinating on. Once we have done that, we can get online and chat. We usually set some kind of time to recheck with each other - like 11:30 AM or so. THEN, since we have also procrastinated with our sewing time, we decided that we would not get online and chat in the afternoon until we have done some stitching. For me, I am making a quilt, and I decided that I'd get one quilt block per day made, and I just completed it. I took a picture of the block, and when my friend signs on,
I can send her the picture.

This has been very motivating to me. My house looks so much better - I am shocked at how much I can get done in an hour! And I'm not rushing about, just getting stuff done. I'm keeping a log in a little notebook, so I can see
what I've accomplished each day. Like a little diary.

Where I was sitting before, in front of the TV, I have for the last two days, not even had the TV on until my husband got home to turn it on! And, funny thing is, I haven't missed  it one bit!

Hey, a small success!!! I'll take it!!!!!!!
(Thanks, Robin)
